10 of Hearts Costume

I am a teacher. And when you are a teacher, costume days come around more than just once a year at Halloween.

We had a Valentine's Spirit Week at my school this past week. One of the days was Love for Your Friends Day.

All the kids dressed the same as their friends, and the teachers were a deck of cards. Each grade had a different number. My homeroom class is a 10th grade class, so I got the number 10.

I was going to order a t-shirt from Amazon, but if course once I thought about it, it was too late. The t-shirt would not arrive in time. So off to Pinterest I went to find some inspiration.

Here is how mine turned out:

Steps to follow:

1. Die cut 20 hearts from red cardstock. I used the biggest die in the set below. For the smaller hearts, I used pre-made die cuts that I found at Michaels.

2. Using pencil, trace the 1 and 0 using a number stencil on the left top and right bottom of both pieces of foam board. Make sure to turn the boards upside to complete the bottom so it looks like a real playing card.

3. Using a craft knife cut a 1 inch hole in the foam board to thread the ribbon through to create the straps. I cut the board about 1 inch down from the 0 on the top left and then measured with a ruler the same distance from the other side to create the second slit. Repeat on the second board.

4. Start gluing with regular glue the first 9 hearts in the pattern they would be on a playing card on each foam board.

5. Thread the ribbon through the slits and using hot glue, glue the ribbon to the front of the foam board. I left about 2 inches that I glued down to secure the straps in place. Repeat on the second side and then for the second foam board. I used the hot temperature setting to attach the ribbon.

6. Glue the last heart over the ribbon to hide it.

7. Glue the smaller heart die cuts under the 1s in four corners.

8. Using a red paint marker, color in the numbers. I used the Karin marker. The brush tip made it very easy to paint all the curves of the numbers and the paint went on really well to the foam board.

Finished!
